With a forecast of 56.5 million presences for the months of June, July, August and September, the volumes of the 2024 summer season of outdoor tourism are expected to be in line with those of last summer (the number of presences stood at 56.3 million) and up 1% compared to the pre-pandemic period (55.9 recorded in 2019). To arrive at the Observatory’s forecasts, a number of impact factors arising from the current macroeconomic context were analysed.
The analysis of the data collected in the Outdoor Tourism Observatory shows that 2023 was the year of definitive recovery after the pandemic period. In particular, presences in the outdoor sector reached 68.6 million for the entire year and, with a +2% on 2022, recorded the best year in the last 7 years.
Looking specifically at the summer, presences were 56.3 million, down 0.3% compared to 2022, a sign of a significant growth in presences in the period from October to May. The attendance figure was however perfectly in line with the forecast of the 2023 edition of the Observatory, with a difference of only 1%.
The Observatory’s analysis perimeter sticks to all players in the open-air macro-sector (camping and holiday villages), continuing to present concrete and strategic insights. There are two new features in the 2024 edition: the extension of the survey to a panel of 300 trade and institutional operators, with the aim of investigating the perception of opinion leaders in the sector regarding the last summer season and expectations for the next, and the introduction of an in-depth analysis to estimate the direct economic impact of the outdoor sector.
